Declaration of Drought - March 2025
MPI has officially extended the drought declaration in the Waikato and several other North Island regions.
On average, this is one of the driest periods we have seen in recent history. Normally, by this time of the year, we would have seen some rain to get things back on track. It may appear we’ve had rain in the form of thunderstorms, but they are not helpful to farmers, with much of it washing off. The extended declaration recognises the impact the hot, dry conditions are having on farmers.
As a result of the declaration, special powers are granted to MPI to release support for the farmers in the region. In reality, the special powers afforded to MPI are fairly limited and consist of:
A small donation to the Rural Support Trust for them to offer counselling services
A change in the income equalisation rules to allow farmers to late deposit and early withdraw
This tool is administered by the IRD and merely allows a farmer to smooth their income. In many cases, this is only useful if they are selling capital livestock in one year to then repurchase the following year, or if they need to buy a lot of feed in one year.
We know it’s tough out there for our clients – call in for a coffee and chat on us.
