Succession planning event recap

Over 50 farmers and rural professionals gathered at the Millennium Hotel in Taupō on Wednesday 21 May for a pivotal seminar hosted by BFA and Craigs Investment Partners. The event focused on farm succession planning, a topic that can be confronting for some, is often overlooked despite its importance for the future of farming businesses and families.

Attendees heard from ‘The Resilient Farmer’ Doug Avery, renowned rural advocate and mental health champion. Doug shared his lived experience with farm succession, offering a blend of emotional honesty, and practical advice, all delivered with a healthy dose of Doug Avery humour.

In addition to Doug Avery’s keynote, the event featured a diverse group of expert speakers who shared invaluable insights and strategies for tackling both the practical and emotional sides of succession planning. Nick Hume, Director and Client Advisor at BFA, emphasised the importance of open dialogue in the succession process. “Farm succession planning is often a conversation that gets put off until the last minute, but it’s one of the most important things a farming family can do to ensure their business, and legacy, can continue. We hope this event has encouraged people to engage with their support team to begin the process. If even just one family goes away from today away and begins the succession planning process then we have succeeded.” And, given the feedback coming in from the attendees, it seems as though the event has done just that with one farming family commenting that the presentation “gave us food for thought and the confidence to get things started.”

With over 50 people from the rural profession in the room, BFA used the opportunity to officially launch ‘AgriTalk’. The AgriTalk brand will act as the umbrella for all of BFA’s Agriculture related communications, resources and other activity.

Looking ahead, BFA and Craigs Investment Partners plan to continue supporting farmers with resources and events designed to foster long-term sustainability in farm businesses and help farmers navigate the complexities of succession planning.

Kim Manunui

Hi, I’m Kim and I work with a great team to help individuals, as well as small and not so small businesses get their message, product and services to the world using digital media and creating wonderful websites that don’t cost the earth.

I was born in Canada, and grew up around Vancouver and the mountains of British Columbia. My love of pristine environments led me to New Zealand and eventually to the mountains, lakes and rivers of the central North Island which is home. My family’s heritage is here, and it’s from here that Korio traverses the planet.

The digital world is never static and neither are we.

And I say ‘we’ because I work with an awesome group of talented people who I gather together as required to complete a project.  Whatever your business, not-for-profit or individual needs are we gather the best team to get the job done.

Collaboratively we are creative, share sustainable values and work hard for great outcomes because that’s the buzz of satisfaction that drives us.

If you have an audience and market to reach, we can make that happen. Creative design, words that work and smart behind the scenes stuff that cuts through the online noise. We’ll design your website and then build it. We’ll manage the content as well as all your hosting needs. We can handle your online advertising so you get noticed,
and we’ll manage your social media presence so you get the clicks, likes and engagement to grow your business. All within the budget you set, because none of this needs to cost the earth.  And the job doesn’t stop when your website goes live. We are your virtual business partner.
